scarred-men How did Action Man get that scar on his face?
  • PLASTIC surgery.
    Liam Welsby, Accrington, Lancs (daiwelsby@aol.com)
  • KEN caught him canoodling with Barbie.
Feargal Mc Kay, Dublin, Ireland (info@imn.ie)
  • ANYONE who has seen Action Man with his kit off will realise that the scar on his face is the least of his worries.
    Ed Tierney, London N6 (ed.tierny@mail.sema.co.uk)
  • ACTION MAN'S designers wanted to patent the figure - GI Joe in the USA. But lawyers advised them that there was little chance of patenting the human body, so they added the scar and were then able to patent it.
    Alan Lloyd Schaumburg, Illinois, USA.
  • I FIND Alan Lloyd Schaumburg's explanation of Action Man's scar unbelievable in detail: in the UK ideas are patentable, designs copyright, and as far as I know the same goes in the US. I would guess that both (a) the principle of a jointed doll and (b) a doll representing a warrior which has a wide selection of different uniforms and equipment, are in principle patentable (though I wonder if either was sufficiently new at the time). It is quite believable that the scar was added to make the design distinctive for copyright purposes: but then anybody producing a rival design without the scar would not be infringing the copyright.
Colin Fine, Shipley, W Yorks (colin@kindness.demon.co.uk)
  • Giving the Hun a jolly good pranging no doubt!
    Patrick White, Geneva, Switzerland
  • In the days before political correctness the gun toting macho hero who is 'Action Man' went on a date with GI Jane. When he showed her his 'lethal weapon' she cut him with her knife. hence the scar.
    Rob Bound, Oswestry shropshire
  • I think he did it to himself so that barbie thought he was a hardnut.
    Dan Andrews , Horndean, Portsmouth
  • My son says that he was in a motor bike acicdent and was thrown off his bike over a bridge in to the water, on impact with the water and rocks on the bank he got the scar. When he was rescued he couldn't remember who he was or any of his past life prior to the accident.
    Lee Cook, Swindon
  • Youre all wrong. He actually got the scar when a bottle of his mummy's nail varnish exploded while he was playing with it.
    Peter Harrison, Cambridge, Cambs
  • In truth, he was bitten by a snake. (Sad that I know this, but there you go). The real question is, why was he wearing blue plastic underpants?
    Simon Cockayne, San Francisco, USA
  • Trimming his nose hair.
    Allan Jones, Prestatyn, Wales
  • From my memories of Action Man I could never get him to lie prone holding a rifle and keep his head up like he was going to fire it, so I reckon he got a nasty whack on the cheek when the rifle recoiled on him.
    John Stevens, Sydney, Australia
  • He got it from drinking 16 pints and betting his mates he could surf on the bonnet of a Cortina at 80 kph.
    Ken Brown, Louisville, Kentucky, USA
  • Showed his "lethal weapon". Nonsense! Couldn't even get his pants off.
    GI Jane
  • Evan more worriyingly...... how did he get that piece of string in his back!
    Vince, Burgess Hill, UK
  • He did it in training where as Ken went to Harvard and ended up as "advisor" to the saudi's for the CIA. Action Man is the real hero here not the cowardly Ken.
    James Flowers,
  • So, not a moulding mistake in the factory then?
    Francis McLoughlin, Keyport, USA
